BURLINGAME – David A. Sanchez, president of the 340,000-member California Teachers Association, issued this statement on the governor’s new budget plan being an attack on voter-approved Proposition 98:
“The governor's latest budget proposal is an outright attack on the minimum school funding law, Proposition 98, and will change public schools as we know them. His plan attacks our minimum school funding law by illegally siphoning off an estimated $7-$9 billion from the base of public education funding this year, and every subsequent year. That’s the equivalent of an ongoing cut of more than $30,000 to every classroom in California. Voters have spoken clearly and loudly of their support for Prop 98, including the defeat of the governor’s initiative in 2005.
“It’s time for the governor and the legislators to listen, to stop playing games with our children’s future, and to get serious about providing additional revenue for their education.”
