FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SACRAMENTO – CTA President Barbara E. Kerr issued the following statement on Tuesday's Primary Election.
"Yesterday's election of Phil Angelides as the Democratic nominee for Governor is the beginning of a promising future for California. California teachers know that Phil will put students and public schools first. Voters will have a clear choice in November, and teachers will be working to elect a governor whom students, parents and schools can count on.
"CTA is pleased that so many of the winning candidates are strong supporters of public education. In the State Assembly, this includes Tony Mendoza, who is a teacher at Brooklyn Avenue Elementary School in East LA in the 56th District, and Kevin de León, a CTA Human Rights advocate in the 45th District.
"While there are many victories to celebrate, we are disappointed that Propositions 81 and 82 failed. Both would have helped enrich the future of our children and California. Providing free, quality preschool to every child is still one of the best ways to improve student learning and strengthen our public schools."
