CTA-NEA Coordinating Director
Sonia Martin-Solis brings a history of teacher activism to the CTA Board of Directors. A kindergarten teacher and member of the United Teachers Los Angeles, Martin-Solis has served as an NEA Board member, a CTA State Council representative, a site rep, and a member of UTLA’s house of representatives. She received a WHO (We Honor Ours) Award from UTLA in 2009 for her contributions to her local association. She began her term of office on the CTA board in July as CTA-NEA Coordinating Director.
She began her career 22 years ago at 66th Street Elementary School and currently teaches at Hillcrest Elementary Center for Enriched Studies in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
“I became a teacher because I wanted to help others in my community to improve their educational opportunities,” says Martin-Solis. In addition, she served as a member of the transition team for Superintendent Tom Torlakson.
Martin-Solis received her bachelor’s degree at Wellesley College in Massachusetts and her teaching credential through the LAUSD Intern Program. She resides in Norwalk with her husband, Juan Solis.
