CTA Board member George Melendez, a fifth-grade teacher at Barrel Springs Elementary in Palmdale School District in the High Desert area of Los Angeles County, is serving his third three-year term on the Board, which expires June 25, 2017.
A public school teacher for more than 21 years, Melendez represents teachers in most of Kern, Tulare, Kings, Inyo and Mono counties, as well as educators in the High Desert, the northeastern portion of Los Angeles County.
He holds a bachelor’s and master’s in Human Development, with a Bicultural Specialization, from Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena. His teaching credential is from National University in Sherman Oaks.
Melendez has significant association experience, having served as vice president of the Palmdale Elementary Teachers Association, and secretary to the CTA High Desert Service Center Council. He was named 2001 Teacher of the Year at Chaparral Elementary in the Palmdale district. He was the 2007 recipient of the CTA State “We Honor Ours” (WHO) award from the High Desert Service Center.
