Northern and Central California:
Hayward: The “Angry, Tired Teachers Band” of Hayward High School teachers will be playing at the Hayward Education Association’s 3 p.m. protest rally at the corner of Mission and Jackson streets. Teachers from New Haven, San Lorenzo and Newark school districts will attend. Assembly Member Mary Hayashi and Senator Ellen Corbett will speak.
Oakland: Hundreds of Oakland and Alameda teachers will converge for a rally at Frank Ogawa Square at City Hall in Oakland at 4 p.m.
San Jose: Crowds of teachers from several Santa Clara County school districts will be picketing over the state budget education cuts from 4-6 p.m. in front of the Valley Fair, Oakridge and Eastridge malls.
Richmond: United Teachers of Richmond members are fanning out by the hundreds to do picketing against state cuts at three locations, all from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday: in Richmond, at Richmond Parkway and Bloom Drive; in San Pablo, at San Pablo Dam Road and Interstate 80; in El Cerrito, at Central and San Pablo avenues.
Walnut Creek: A huge 4-6 p.m. protest rally is planned with speakers including teachers, parents, administrators, plus Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier and state Senator Tom Torlakson. Location is Civic Center Park.
Pittsburg: Local teachers will be picketing along Buchanan Road starting at 3:30 p.m., followed by a picnic at Buchanan Park, located at corner of Harbor and Buchanan. Parents, school board members and education support professional staff have been invited to attend.
Santa Rosa: The local education community will hold a rally against state budget cuts for education in Court House Square from 4-6 p.m.
Marin County: Local teachers will picket in five cities from 4-5 p.m.: San Rafael, corner of Marin Civic Center Drive and North San Pedro, and Irwin at Third Street area; San Anselmo, Sir Francis Drake at Red Hill Road; Kentfield, Sir Francis Drake at Bacich School; Tiburon, Blackie’s Pasture Park; Novato, Diablo Avenue and Redwood Boulevard.
Bakersfield: Members of the Bakersfield Elementary Teachers Association will join educators from surrounding areas for a “Day of the Teacher Party in the Park” on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Yokuts Park. Along with local elected officials and other speakers, the event will provide stations for parents, students, community members and teachers to call and write post cards to legislators and letters to the editor containing the “Cuts Hurt" message.
Chico: Educators in Chico and the surrounding area will hold a rally at the Downtown Plaza in Chico on Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Participants will march around the Plaza and then hear a variety of speakers from the schools and the community. Postcards will be available at the Plaza for people to send to legislators.
Fresno: Fresno teachers will celebrate their hard work and successes at a Day of the Teacher event at the Newman Center from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Organizers expect a turnout between 200-400 teachers. A press conference will be held at 4:30 p.m. to explain the impact of the current Budget Crisis on Fresno teachers.
Fresno-Madera: The Fresno Madera Service Center Council will hold a rally & open house at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, at the Fresno Regional Resource Center, 5330 North Fresno St., Fresno. The rally will call attention to the state budget crisis and the need to properly fund education for students.
Merced: Teachers from Merced and surrounding areas will hold a “Rally in the Valley!” in downtown Merced’s Bob Hart Square from 4-5 p.m. on Wednesday. Joining them will be Lily Eskelsen, secretary-treasurer of the National Education Association. The Rally will give educators, education support professionals and the community an opportunity to send CTA’s message to local lawmakers that CUTS HURT!
Redding: Redding RRC will host demonstrations (group of teachers with picket signs, etc.) in Redding (across street from Cypress Elementary School just west of Redding City Hall); Red Bluff at the corner of Walnut and Main streets; Yreka on Main Street; and Susanville on Main Street at the Susanville Market and Lassen High School. The events will be held between the hours of 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 pm - specific times within that time frame are being determined by the participants at each venue.
San Joaquin County: Educators from San Joaquin County will coordinate several "Rush Hour Power" rallies from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday to show their opposition to proposed budget cuts. Teachers will be at the following corners with signs: (1) Kettleman Lane and Hutchins Street, Lodi; (2) Pacific Avenue and March Lane in Stockton; and (3) Union Road and Yosemite Avenue, Manteca.
Sacramento: The Sacramento City Teachers Association will film teachers filling out postcards on the North Steps of the state Capitol beginning at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Teachers will then deliver their cards to the governor and to their legislators. The footage will be posted on “YouTube.”
Yolo County: Davis teachers will be joined by Yolo County educators, parents and community members in a march and rally to protect education funding on Wednesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. from the corner of Russell and California, one block east of the Anderson/Russell intersection. The group plans to march to the Farmers Market for a rally at 6 p.m.
Yuba City: Yuba City area educators will join the California School Employees Association on May 14 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. to line the “highways and byways” of the area in protest of the governor’s proposed budget cuts. Participants will meet at the Gray Avenue School in Yuba City and will fan out along Highway 20 to send a message to the Governor and State Legislature that they must fund public education. They will be joined by educators and supporters in five other counties along Highway 20 as well.
Southern California:
Alhambra: Teachers, parents, classified employees and school administrators will form a “human billboard” and participate in informational picketing outside Alhambra Unified School District (Corner of Garfield and Alhambra Road), 3:45 p.m.
Burbank: Hundreds of Burbank Teachers Association members will rally and protest at 3:45 p.m in front of City Hall, 275 E. Olive Ave., over the governor’s proposed $4.8 billion in cuts. Crowds of parents and community supporters are also expected to attend.
Downey: Teachers, classified staff, and administrators from Downey and Norwalk/La Mirada will rally and form a human chain outside the Tri-City Educators office, 11310 Firestone Blvd at 3:45 p.m. This is part of ongoing efforts in the area that include a massive petition drive to protect schools.
Glendale: With a theme of “Adequately Fund Education,” scores of Glendale Teachers Association members will hold a rally against state education cuts at 3:45 p.m. outside Glendale Central Library, 222 E. Harvard St., Glendale.
Lancaster: The Antelope Valley Education Association is hosting a news conference with parents, students, school board members and community members at 4:00 p.m. in front of the offices of state Senator George Runner, 848 W. Lancaster Blvd., Suite 101, Lancaster, 93534.
Long Beach: District teachers, administrators, and parents will rally to tell Sacramento “Education Cuts Hurt!” at International Elementary School field, 700 Locust Street at 3:45 p.m.
Montebello: Teachers, parents, school board members will rally against cuts at Montebello City Park, 236 S. Taylor Ave at 4 p.m. In addition to the rally a new book drive to support the district summer reading program will be conducted.
Orange County: Educators and labor groups from all over the county will rally at the Santa Ana Civic Center on Thursday May 15 at 4:00 p.m.
Pasadena: A “Raise Your Voice” Education Budget Cut Protest is being held in front of every school in the Pasadena Unified School District on Friday, May 16, 2008 from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.
San Bernardino: State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell will join a large rally of at least 1,000 teachers and supporters protesting against drastic state school cutbacks. The rally will be held by the San Bernardino/Riverside Education Coalition at the corner of Waterman Avenue and Hospitality Lane. The rally starts at 4:30 p.m.
Santa Clarita: Parents, educators and students from five local school districts will join the College of the Canyons for a rally and news conference at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, the day before “Day of the Teacher,” to denounce devastating local impacts to schools of proposed state budget cuts.
Simi Valley/Las Virgenes/Moorpark/Conejo: Simultaneous rallies from 4 -5 p.m. in Simi (Corner of Sycamomre and Cochran, and at 118 Fwy and Erringer), Las Virgenes (LVUSD Headquarters, 4111 N. Las Virgenes Rd, Calabasas), Conejo (Corner of Moorpark and Thousand Oaks Blvd) and at Corner of Moorpark and Los Angeles Streets.
Whittier: Wearing school shirts or the color red, hundreds of Whittier-area school district employees will rally from 4-5:30 p.m. at East Whittier Middle School, 14421 Whittier Blvd., Whittier. Teachers from East Whittier, Little Lake City, Los Nietos, South Whittier, Whittier City and Whittier Union will join the protest.
Imperial County: Teachers and parents will rally at the El Centro office of Assembly member Bonnie Garcia at 4:30 p.m.
Corona/Norco: Teachers from Corona and Norco will join for a postcard writing party; then they will take a bus ride to the San Bernardino Coalition Rally.
Rancho Mirage: Rancho Mirage teachers will rally at Assembly member Bonnie Garcia’s Cathedral City office from 4:30 until 6:00 p.m.
San Bernardino: Members and supporters of the San Bernardino County Education Coalition will join State Superintendent Jack O’Connell at a 4:30 p.m. rally at the intersection of Hospitality and Waterman Streets in San Bernardino.
Carlsbad: North County educators, parents and business leaders will rally at Holiday Park from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.
San Diego: The 8,000-member San Diego Education Association (SDEA) is holding a celebration of teachers where educators will fill out postcards telling state legislators not to make drastic education cuts. The event is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Marina Village Conference Center, 1936 Quivira Way, San Diego, 92109.
Escondido: Elementary teachers in Escondido will be gathering at the Escondido Center for the Arts at 4 p.m. and will march one block to City Hall, where teachers and administrators will speak out about state education cuts. Then the crowd will march to a park.
Chula Vista: South County Teachers United is holding a large community rally with several school districts in Chula Vista at 4 p.m. at Friendship Park, corner of F Street and Fourth Avenue.
