Urge Rejection of SB 1100 - Suspension of Teacher Tax Credit

CTA is working to defeat a provision of the state budget compromise announced by the Governor and the Legislature that would suspend the teacher tax credit for two years.

The proposal would raise an individual teacher's 2004 state income taxes by up to $1,500 annually by suspending the teachers' tax credit for two years.

Overall, this new tax on teachers would cost California's dedicated educators as much as $190 million in increased taxes on their 2004 state tax returns.

Please get in touch with your Senators (Assembly Members have already voted) and urge them to reject the new tax on teachers, SB 1100.

The below Alert will provide you with more detailed information about the issues. If you need any more information, please contact Legislative Advocate Estelle Lemieux at 916.325-1500.

Thank you again for your hard work on behalf of your colleagues on this key issue.

Defeat New Tax on Teachers - Vote No on SB 1100

Your help is urgently needed to defeat a provision of the state budget compromise announced by the Governor and the Legislature that would suspend the teacher tax credit for two years.

SB 1100 would raise an individual teacher's 2004 income taxes by up to $1,500. Overall, it would cost teachers as much as $190 million in 2004 alone.

The credit provides teachers with $250 to $1,500 as a credit on the state income taxes. The amount varies depending on a teacher's years of service and earnings.

The credit reimburses teachers for the thousands of dollars that they spend out of their own pockets to buy supplies and materials for their students and classrooms.

CTA President, Barbara E. Kerr, denounced the proposed rollback as a double hit on teachers. "We keep hearing about no new taxes, but to tax the teachers of California without warning is an outrage."

CTA Members:

Call on your Senators to reject the new teacher tax increase in SB 1100.
