Unit Description and/or Conditions Unique to Assignment

The Fontana Teachers Association is a single-unit Option 1 UniServ located in the western area of San Bernardino County. The Association represents over 2,100 bargaining unit members with a membership of over 97% and an agency fee provision in its collective bargaining agreement. Growth has slowed but is still continuing. FTA is the third largest CTA affiliate in the San Bernardino and Riverside County area. The chapter employs two full-time associate support staff, has a full-time release president and owns its own office building.The Fontana Unified School District consists of twenty-nine elementary schools, seven middle schools, four comprehensive high schools, and two continuation high schools. Additional schools are being built and others are in the planning stages. The district will be operating on one single-track year-round calendar, one four-track year-round calendar and one traditional calendar.The chapter is an active participant in the local community as well as the San Bernardino County Coalition. Therefore, demonstrated leadership ability in building and sustaining chapter-community coalitions is an important requirement for the successful candidate.This position involves extensive member advocacy and representation duties at both site and district levels. The chapter has a large and active committee structure in place requiring staff support. The chapter also seeks a candidate with successful experience in the areas of member training, arbitration, personnel issues, instructional and professional development and bargaining/budget analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Primary responsibility is to serve as organizer and consultant to CTA chapters in the development of chapter organization, chapter service programs, contract negotiations and contract maintenance.
  • Provide staff assistance and service as consultant to chapter leadership and to members in negotiations, grievances, organizational development and chapter communications.
  • Serve as consultant and staff resource to Unit's Board of Directors on current problems facing the education profession in California.
  • Represent the chapter in communicating Association policies and programs to lay and professional groups.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director or her designee.

Qualifications:

  • A BS/BA or higher degree.
  • Experience with and broad understanding of professional teacher organization programs and services at local, state and national levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in working with professional groups.
  • Demonstrated organizing, negotiating and coordinating skills necessary to successfully complete complex group projects and activities.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and learn programs necessary to support chapter bargaining, organizing, and communications.
  • Demonstrated ability in written and oral communications.
  • Broad understanding of the critical issues and problems facing the public schools and the teaching profession in California.
  • Valid California Drivers License.

This position is in a bargaining unit represented by CSO. Salaries are established by a collective bargaining agreement. Step placement is also determined by the CTA/CSO Agreement.
