Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts research and writes position papers, articles and other scholarly materials.
  • Works with chapters and other groups of members and staff to resolve intra-and inter-group conflicts, to improve inter-personal skills, and to heighten understanding and respect for human and civil rights concerns.
  • Works closely with the Human Rights Department Training Cadres.
  • Assists in designing, monitoring, evaluating, and modifying workshops in all departmental programs.
  • Delivers departmental programs and services to members, leaders, and staff both in workshops and personal consultation sessions.
  • Develops resource materials for members and staff on issues related to human and civil rights.
  • Assists in developing training materials and in coordinating conferences and other training programs for which the department is responsible.
  • Provides advice and assistance to regional and local Equity Team Contacts in developing and promoting projects and activities that advance the Association's human and civil rights goals.
  • Acts as a consultant to various committees and task forces.
  • Acts as a resource to field staff in all Human Rights matters.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A BS/BA or higher degree.
  • A thorough knowledge of the association, and an ability to articulate the human and civil rights goals and policies of CTA and NEA.
  • A broad understanding of the human rights and equity issues facing public education and educators in California, as well as those facing the state generally.
  • Ability to work effectively with members, leaders, and staff colleagues.
  • A demonstrated ability to write and speak articulately to groups of members, leaders, staff and the general public.
  • A demonstrated ability to conduct research, analyze information, and present the results in a coherent and organized manner.
  • Experience in designing and/or modifying workshops in human rights and/or equity related issues.
  • Computer literacy including ability to create PowerPoint presentations.
  • Valid CA Drivers License.

This position is in a bargaining unit represented by CSO. Salaries are established by a collective bargaining agreement. Step placement is also determined by the CTA/CSO Agreement.
