Unit Description and/or Conditions Unique to Assignment
Region 3 and 4 encompass both rural and large urban communities. The political consultant must travel within the region frequently as a part of the regular work assignment. This job will require flexibility and ability to be assigned to special projects in both regions.
Region 3 and Region 4 have approximately 313 CTA local chapters spread throughout the 12 counties that require systemic receipt and dissemination of information about school board races, bond issues, and other political activities. Strong interpersonal communication skills, technology skills and the ability to work effectively with management, CTA staff, leaders and members are critical attributes for this assignment.
Region 3 and Region 4 have many pro-education members of the legislature and school boards. The regions also have extremist groups attempting to exert their influence. CTA and its chapters are often the target of these extremists. Consequently, this assignment requires strong political advocacy and political organizing skills to assist field staff and chapter leaders with their political action plans. Region 3 and Region 4 are key to many legislative and ballot victories for CTA. It is also home to the largest media market in the state.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate and assist in implementing campaign and election activities in Southern California and specifically the City and County of Los Angeles.
- Coordinate and assist in coalition building for political activities in Southern California.
- Coordinate acquisition and analysis of data required by CTA decision-making criteria for independent campaigns and issue advocacy campaigns.
- Coordinate with CTA Legal and Accounting departments to assure CTA and CTA/ABC compliance with campaign finance laws relevant to assigned campaigns.
- Assist Region 3 and 4 Political Organizers to delivery of CTA political program and activates.
- Maintain liaison, as permissible under campaign finance laws, with election activities relevant to assigned campaigns.
- Provide regular reports on assigned activities.
- Make presentations, as necessary, to leadership, staff, and membership groups of CTA.
- Provide training as necessary, to leadership, staff, and members.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- A BS/BA or higher degree.
- A working knowledge of the California political processes and functions of the State government.
- Demonstrated knowledge of an ability to analyze and explain relevant legislative and political processes.
- Demonstrated knowledge of all the necessary elements for a political campaign plan.
- Ability to work cooperatively with members, staff, and general public.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with outside vendor, pollsters and political/media consultants.
- Working knowledge of CTA/NEA political action programs and governance structure is desirable.
- Broad understanding of the critical issues and problems facing the public schools and the teaching profession in California.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and learn programs necessary to prepare presentations and work related materials.
- Valid California Drivers License.

This position is in a bargaining unit represented by CSO. Salaries are established by a collective bargaining agreement. Step placement is also determined by the CTA/CSO Agreement.
