Statement from CTA President Barbara E. Kerr on Legislature’s Passage of Quality Education Investment Act

Hopeful news for our students, teachers and others

August 31, 2006

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BURLINGAME – “The passage of the Quality Education Improvement Act by the state Legislature late last night is the most exciting and hopeful news our students, teachers and others in the public education community could receive today, as we begin a new school year and the legislature ends one.

“The passage of CTA-sponsored SB 1133 by Senator Tom Torlakson means nearly $3 billion over the next seven years to help students and teachers in our lowest performing schools close the achievement gap. It means these districts will be able to reduce class sizes, attract and retain highly qualified teachers and have the flexibility to support programs that best fit the needs of their students. Finally, it means a settlement of CTA’s lawsuit against Gov. Schwarzenegger for refusing to repay the billions he borrowed from public education in 2004-05.

“We are pleased that the Legislature recognized the critical importance of this bill and worked so hard to pass it. We look forward to Gov. Schwarzenegger signing the bill when it reaches his desk.”
