CTA Kicks Off New Back-to-School Ad Campaign Today Reminding Parents Their Involvement is Beneficial to Student Learning

Radio and newspaper ads offer tips for helping students

August 25, 2008

BURLINGAME – With California students heading back to school, the California Teachers Association is launching its eighth annual family involvement campaign on radio and in print today to remind families that students do better in school when everyone is involved in their education.

The ads will be heard on radio stations and displayed in newspapers throughout the state over the next four weeks to urge parents and caregivers to stay active in their children’s education.

One ad features children singing in rhyme and verse, and concluding “With family as part of our team, we can reach to anything we dream,” followed by CTA President David A. Sanchez reminding listeners that success in school starts at home.

“There are many teaching and learning opportunities at home that are overlooked or taken for granted,” Sanchez said. “Our message highlights some of the easy ways parents and caregivers can make sure learning starts at home. We know families and teachers working together give kids their best chance to succeed.”

A second radio ad features a mother and son working together in the kitchen while she quizzes him about how many ounces make a cup. In that spot, Sanchez tells parents there are many ways they can help at home: “teaching simple math while sharing household chores; reading together; scheduling a regular time for homework; and creating a quiet place to study.”

The radio ads begin today and run for four weeks on more than 85 stations in every California media market, including Spanish- and Asian-language stations. The print ads will appear in 60 ethnic newspapers, including African American, Latino, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Hmong, Vietnamese, Indian, Korean, Filipino and Native American publications.

The radio ads and learning tips for families are posted on the CTA website: www.cta.org.
