Teachers Reject Senate Budget Proposal That Locks Public Schools into Future Cuts

David A. Sanchez, president of the 340,000-member California Teachers Association released the following statement regarding the Senate Budget Proposal:

August 29, 2008

“The Senate Budget Proposal would make it impossible for local schools to meet the needs of students. Giving the Governor the power to eliminate cost-of-living-increases and cut school budgets in the middle of the school year will make it harder to attract and retain quality teachers and make it impossible for schools to plan for the future. That’s budget chaos, not budget reform.

“Our students deserve on-going funding, not more cuts, false solutions and larger class sizes. It’s time for lawmakers to listen to parents, educators and voters, and support a budget plan that prevents deeper cuts to schools, colleges, healthcare and other vital services. The new school year should be a time for new beginnings, not renewed sacrifices.”
