“The governor’s decision to avoid the suspension of Proposition 98 is a step in the right direction. His proposed budget revision shows he listened to educators, parents and the will of the voters by not suspending the minimum school funding law. But any cut to education hurts our students and schools, and let’s be clear, this revised budget proposal still cuts billions of dollars from public education.
“The May Revision still cuts the state’s Class Size Reduction program, which means squeezing even more students into already overcrowded classrooms. It also cuts programs that target low-income students and those schools that need help the most.
“With this budget plan, California continues to rank 46th in per-pupil funding and dead last in teachers, librarians and counselors per student.
“We are also concerned about cuts to programs that serve our students and their families. Cutting health care for children makes it harder for students to come to school ready to learn.
“We will be reviewing all the details of the revised proposal, but continuing to balance this budget with a cuts-only approach hurts vital services that all Californians need and deserve. Lawmakers must consider revenue increases to fund education and other vital programs that help children, the poor and working families. We look forward to working with the Legislature and the governor in passing a state budget that invests in the future of our children, our schools and our state.”
