Lawmaker thanked, honored for advocating for community colleges
State Sen. Marty Block was honored as the Community College Association Legislator of the Year during the Fall Conference in Sacramento. Sen. Block represents California’s 39th Senate District, including San Diego, Del Mar and Solano Beach.
He chairs the Senate Education Budget Subcommittee, the Senate Committee on Banking and Financial Institutions, the Capitol Knesset, and the Legislative Jewish Caucus. He also served in the state Assembly, where he was chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee.
Among the key education bills Sen. Block authored is the Community College Baccalaureate Degrees bill, SB 850, which allows 15 community college districts to develop four-year degree programs, increasing access for quality higher education in areas that have a demonstrated need.
Some 175 CCA members from across the state attended the Fall Conference Oct. 8-9. Attendees discussed dual enrollment, legal obligations for higher education faculty, and part-time faculty issues.
In addition, they elected the following to the CCA Board of Directors: Johnnie Terry, District C-2, including Lake Tahoe, San Joaquin Delta, Sierra, Solano; Johnathan Ausubel, District G-1, including Chaffey, Long Beach CC, UF North Orange Co CCD; and Jan Muto, District K, Riverside.
