The Pacific Asian American Award is presented to two (2) individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and leadership. Over a span of two (2) years, Cliff Kusaba and Jenny Chomori helped develop and present a conference on the Manzanar experience.
This conference was held at the Manzanar Relocation Camp at the foot of the Sierra Nevada in May 2012. The Manzanar Relocation Camp was a place where over 110,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II.
The conference provided a rich “Living History Experience” for participants to learn and experience what the Japanese American incarcerees went through during World War II, as a result of Executive Order 9066.
Conference activities included: listening to former incarcerees speak about their Manzanar experience, eating in the same dining hall as it was in 1942 and viewing various videos that depicted the powerful and poignant experience that was Manzanar.
Additionally, Jenny and Cliff developed many resources and materials to give the participants to use as educational tools in the classroom. From this conference, participants gained a new perspective towards the historical event of World War II.
I am proud to present the Pacific Asian American Human Rights Award to Jenny Chomori and Cliff Kusaba!
