Gary Leveque | San Ramon Valley Education Association
This year’s CTA Member Human Rights Award is awarded to Gary LeVeque, an art teacher at Charlotte Wood Middle School in Danville.
Since January 2001, Gary has been the driving force in bringing awareness and change to the San Ramon Unified School District’s anti-bullying program. Back in 2001, Gary, along with forty (40) other students were targeted on a hate-based website. He was called homophobic names and was told to “Move to San Francisco and jump off the Golden Gate Bridge.” Unwavering, Gary started a video series called “Think Before You Speak”. These videos gave targeted students a venue and voice to stand up to their bullies. This video series became the tag line for the nationally acclaimed organization, Gay and Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).
In addition, Gary has produced, “Spirit of Hope”, a concert that raised over $10,000 for water purification in Sri Lanka after their devastating tsunami. His second concert raised over $7,500 for two organizations, Kidcare International and African Literacy.
I am proud to present the recipient of the 2013 CTA Member Human Rights Award, Gary Leveque.
