What is Read Across America?
Read Across America is a national day celebrating reading, sponsored by the National Education Association and CTA along with many of the country’s leading literacy and youth groups. The more children read, the better they read. And the more they read outside of school, the better they do in school. Celebrating reading through different events is a fun way to introduce children to the world of books, words and reading.

This year "Sink Your Teeth Into a Good Book!”
- Gabby and Gator a graphic novel by James Burks about friendship, bullying and being accepted for who you are.
- Boris Ate a Thesaurus by Neil Klayman and Barry Chung is about a boy who eats a thesaurus and speaks in volumes… and synonyms!
Honorary Chairpersons
This year’s honorary co-chairpersons were James Burks, Neil Klayman and Barry Chung, the authors and illustrators for our selected books. We'd also like to recognize our other honorary chair, Lou Paulson, president of the California Professional Firefighters.
Everyone Celebrated!
There are many ways to celebrate and plan a reading event - it doesn't have to end on March 2! Host a bake sale and reading challenge or have a breakfast and read-in party. Invite police and firefighters to read their favorite book and share some tasty tales. Parents can pick up a book and read with children. Older children can read to younger children. Local, city and county librarians can arrange special story hours. You can invite a local news anchor or even your mayor to read to your group. Or invite a local bookstore to host a children’s read-in. The list is endless.
Why March 2?
In California, Read Across America is observed on Friday, March 2, in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Mark your calendar at home and school to remember this special day of reading for students, family and friends.
