Enacted by legislation in 2002, Labor History Week is celebrated the first week of April. Schools are encouraged to commemorate this week with educational exercises that make pupils aware of the role the labor movement has played in shaping California and the United States.
“The labor movement has played a vital role in putting California’s economy on par with that of nations, and making the United States the economic powerhouse of the world,” said former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell.Online teaching and learning resources designed to help students learn about the historical achievements of the labor movement are available:
State Board of Education-approved content standards in history-social studies
Model kindergarten through 12th grade curricula on the life and work of Cesar Chavez
