Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill that allows up to five permanent residents to work at the polls on Election Day to provide language assistance to voters who may not be fully proficient in English.
CTA supports AB 817 by Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) because voting is such an important freedom that every effort should be made to facilitate the voting process. It will now be easier for more than 2.1 million eligible voters, who have a limited English ability, to exercise their right to vote as a U.S. citizen.
Assemblymember Bonta says he believes the bill will also increase civic engagement by allowing residents to take part in the election process..
