Members of the CTA State Council of Education Early Education Committee are set to lobby 17 members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee at the state Capitol on Tuesday, May 13, for a very important purpose: to gain further legislative support for a measure to ensure that all California youngsters benefit from kindergarten.
CTA's only sponsored bill for 2014 is the subject of the member lobbying. AB 1444, by Assembly Education Chair Joan Buchanan (D-Alamo) and Assembly Member Shirley Weber (D-San Diego), is now going before the Assembly Appropriations Committee, which will be focusing on the possible costs of the legislation, which would make kindergarten mandatory, rather than voluntary.
CTA members will be reminding lawmakers the projected costs for the measure are minimal, amounting to about a 5% boost in Average Daily Attendance for kindergarten enrollment.
Please send a message to your lawmaker to urge the 17 Assembly Appropriations Committee members to vote for the measure. You can learn more about the bill and contact your lawmaker via the CTA Legislative Action Center.
