2014-2015 May Budget Revision Expected Next Week

The governor is expected to release a revised budget proposal by May 14, marking the beginning of the end of the annual budget process.

The state constitution gives lawmakers until June 15 to send the governor a final spending plan. The governor has until June 30 to sign it. The new budget goes into effect on July 1.

For students, educators, and schools, the final spending plan will have important implications. It is expected to contain more money for public education. Recent reports indicate revenues have exceeded projections by as much as $1.9 billion, thanks to Proposition 30 overwhelmingly passed by voters in 2012; funding that should be used to repay debts to schools after years of cuts.

Shortly after the release of the May Revision, hundreds of CTA local leaders from around the state will be heading to the Capitol for the Wednesday, May 21, Presidents Lobby Day.
