Professional Development

The California Teachers Association offers statewide conferences designed to provide knowledge and skills for members as they go about the work of the Organization.  Over the years, CTA has been recognized for its excellent leadership and professional development training programs.  When you attend a CTA conference, you receive vital information and perspective from some of the best content experts and thought leaders in public education in the state that you can immediately apply to your role as an educator and local leader.

The NEA Representative Assembly is the largest democratic deliberative assembly in the world. California sends more than 1,000 delegates to the NEA RA each summer. During this annual meeting, CTA members help set policy and chart the direction of NEA business through participation on various committees, constituencies, caucuses, and leadership groups.

The Presidents Conference is a four day training program geared toward local chapter leaders. New presidents arrive on Monday to engage in core sessions especially tailored to assist them in learning their new role as local leaders. Also beginning on Monday, presidents of local chapters in the Community College Association will attend sessions designed to address issues unique to California’s community colleges.

On Tuesday, all returning and new presidents will spend the next few days attending electives and workshops that will explore issues and provide training designed to increase their skills as a local president. 

Doing it Right! Employment Practices for UniServs and Local Chapters is a Post Presidents Conference Leadership Workshop specifically designed for UniServs and Chapters that employ local support staff. The free workshop starts Thursday right after the Presidents Conference and continues all day Friday.

The premiere workshop of its kind, the Summer Institute offers sessions in areas that assist chapter leaders in the day-to-day representation and support of members. Sessions include Communications, Instruction and Professional Development, Emerging Leaders, Bargaining, School Finance, Healthcare Benefits and Issues, Legal, Member Benefits and Community Outreach.

CTA's top policy-making body is the State Council of Education. Meeting four times a year, the council's nearly 800 delegates elect the three state-level CTA officers and the CTA Board of Directors. Council also sets forth CTA policy, develops legislation, and makes recommendations in general elections.

CTA's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues Advisory Committee (GLBTIAC) is proud to present the annual CTA conference addressing issues involving GLBT educators, students and community. This conference is open to all CTA members and will serve as a forum to discuss a variety of subjects affecting the entire membership and California's youth. Participants will have a variety of workshops to choose from, organized into three strands addressing the needs of the CTA Membership, the Students and the Community.

The CTA Good Teaching Conferences are designed to support excellent teaching and learning practices for classroom teachers. Offering a variety of diverse workshops in curriculum content areas for K-12 teachers, the conferences provide opportunities for professional development and offer time to network and share ideas with colleagues and experts in the field.

This conference provides an opportunity for educators from rural, urban, and ESP local areas, throughout the state, to learn, share, strategize and unite together to determine the future of public education. The 2014 Equity and Human Rights Conference captures the essence in CTA’s Mission Statement: to ensure that the dignity and civil rights of all children and youth are protected, and to secure a more equitable and democratic society. The conference combines speakers and workshops to provide all CTA members with a greater understanding of the issues of diversity and equity.

CTA's Regional Leadership Conferences are designed to support and promote CTA members' desire to become more involved in leadership roles within the Association. Members in specific geographical areas -- or "Regions" -- are encouraged to attend the Leadership Conferences, which are divided into four geographical Regions spanning the state. The Region III Leadership Conference is available to members who teach and work in counties ranging from San Luis Obispo to San Bernardino. This year’s conference multi-focused approach on advocacy, professionalism, leadership and vision looks to be one of the best training events of 2014. The focus on building a stronger, member-centered union reflective of our common core values is necessary to Commanding the Road for Great Public Schools, and it is based on themes revealed during relational conversations conducted throughout the region last year.
