Laura Finco - Liaison to Fair Political Practices Commission
The California Fair Political Practices Commission was created as a non-partisan agency to oversee and regulate campaign finances, including but not limited to conflicts of interests, record keeping, gifts and honoraria given to public officials, and campaign spending. The five member commission meets monthly to hear public testimony, review and adopt regulations, issue opinions, and rule on penalties for violations of the Political Reform Act.
As CTA, we have a keen interest in what is going on in the political realm of our State and the elected officials - locally as well as statewide. It is critical that we understand the policies and procedures related to political campaigns.
As a liaison, I feel it is my responsibility to understand the FPPC regulations and enforcement so as to assist local chapters with questions and advice especially in regards to local school board elections. School board trustees oversee our schools so it is imperative that as educators we have an active role in securing school board seats with education savvy candidates.
Politics is central in our public schools. We owe it to our students to fully understand and actively participate in the political process, locally and statewide.
