Boys and Men of Color Program

The achievement gap between Latino and African American boys and young men and their white and Asian American counterparts is of concern and needs to be dealt with head on. CTA strongly supports the efforts of The California Endowment to reverse the disparity of educational opportunities for boys and young men of color in California. Read Across America

Read Across America 2012 offered two great books to savor, along with the theme “Sink Your Teeth Into A Good Book.” One was a graphic novel about bullies, friendship and acceptance and the other was a picture book about a boy who eats a thesaurus, speaks in synonyms and discovers what books are really for. Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee

The Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee (EMAC) monitors ethnic minority representation within the Association and provides ethnic minority input on CTA membership programs and policies. It makes recommendations to the CTA Board of Directors and works at having an Association that is balanced, all-inclusive and equity-minded - with the overall goal of addressing the needs of California's diverse student population. EMAC is composed of representatives from the following caucuses: American Indian/Alaska Native, African American, Hispanic, Pacific Asian American.

African American Leaders Lobby Members of Congress

CTA members lobbied lawmakers in Washington, DC on Thursday, September 22, 2011 as part of their events participating in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's annual conference. Part of their lobbying efforts included discussions about the Jobs Bill and No Child Left Behind.

Among the leaders who addressed Congressman Al Green (Texas) of the Congressional Black Caucus, were CTA African American Issues Caucus Chair and President of the Palmdale Teachers Association Simone Zulu, NEA African American Issues Caucus Chair and a member of the Executive Board for the Oakland Education Association Rosenda Thomas, and UTLA Member Theressa Sams.

Hispanic Leaders Attend CHCI Policy Conference

A CTA delegation of leaders attended the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's annual policy conference in Washington, DC on Sept. 11-13, 2011. The group attended presentations and policy panels, including workshops on Creating a Diverse & High Quality Teaching Workforce for the 21st Century; Immigration Reform & the Dream Act; Prevention First for a Healthy Latino Community; and Housing, Wealth Building & Financial Services.

In attendance were CTA Board Members Marty Meeden & Theresa Montano, and leaders Alex Alguiano, Raul Gonzalez, Margie Granado, Sergio Martinez, Sonia Martin-Solis & Caridad Rivera, as well as CTA staff Lori Easterling & Jennifer Baker. The conference ended with a gala which included President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, as well as numerous members of Congress.
