With more than three decades of teaching experience, Jim Groth, a sixth-grade teacher in the Chula Vista Elementary School District, is serving his third three-year term on the Board, which expires June 25, 2016.
He represents teachers in parts of San Diego County and all of Imperial County.
Groth was president of the Chula Vista Educators from 1989-1995 and 2005-2007. The union represents teachers in Chula Vista Elementary School District, the largest K-6 district in California with 1,300 teachers and 26,000 students, where Groth began teaching in 1975, after teaching for a year in Minnesota.
He is the past chair of the CTA State Council of Education Communications Committee and served as a delegate to State Council, CTA’s top governing body, for many years. He is also a past vice chair of CTA’s political action committee, the union’s CTA/ABC Committee.
Teaching is a family affair as Groth’s wife, Karen, is a retired educator from the San Diego City Schools District. They have three adult children and live in Bonita in San Diego County.
Born in Minnesota, Groth earned a bachelor’s at the University of Minnesota and a master’s from United States International University in San Diego. His teaching credential is from San Diego State University.
