CTA Board member Don Dawson, a veteran teacher at Silver Creek High School in San Jose’s East Side Union High School District, is serving his third three-year term on the Board, which expires on June 25, 2015.
He represents educators in the city of Fremont as well as Santa Clara and San Mateo counties and has been a public school teacher for 22 years.
Dawson is part of a CTA high school reform work group that’s looking at various alternatives to current high school structures, including making schools smaller to help improve the performance of students.
His CTA experience includes serving as bargaining chair of his CTA chapter, the 1,200-member East Side Teachers Association, and as chair of the Santa Clara County Service Center Council. He also served on the NEA Board of Directors from 2004-2006.
The teaching profession is a major part of Dawson’s public and private lives. One of his two grown sons, Nathan, is an elementary teacher in the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District in San Jose. His mother worked for 25 years as an elementary school librarian.
