Curtis L. Washington

At-Large

Curtis L. Washington, an educator for 20 years, is a physics teacher at Mills High School in Millbrae in the San Mateo Union High School District and is serving his second three-year term on the Board, which expires June 25, 2015.

As an at-large Board member, Washington, who holds degrees from Princeton and Stanford universities, represents all California minority educators.

Washington is a strong advocate for public education. He is a former member of the State Board of Education and was appointed in 2009 by the SBE to the state Advisory Commission on Charter Schools. His CTA work includes serving as chair of the union’s high school restructuring task force, as a member of the CTA workgroup on educational change, and as the union’s liaison to Cal-OSHA. He was appointed by former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin to a committee on the state’s high school exit exam.

In 2000, when CTA led the successful fight to defeat a California school voucher initiative, Washington took part in a debate that aired nationwide on public television.

He earned his teaching credential and a bachelor’s in engineering from Princeton, and a master’s in business administration from Stanford. He is a former engineer for United Airlines and worked as a management consultant.

Washington lives in Brisbane in San Mateo County with his wife and their two sons. Email him at cwashington@cta.org.  Download bio.
