César Chávez believed that all people deserved to be treated with dignity and respect. Chávez fought for better treatment for the men and women that picked the strawberries in the fields of Delano, California – where pesticides laced the fruit that families of farm workers worked tirelessly to provide the supermarket owners of America. The workers inhaled dangerous pesticides that made them sick and caused serious birth defects. The mask, worn by my mother, Nelly, depicts the severity of the hardship of the strawberry fields. Her dark, sullen eyes…..the sadness and torture of their experience.
